Call me old fashion, but lately I have really enjoyed reading books from brother's and sisters of long ago! I am currently enjoying the writings of Thomas a Kempis. Thomas was a monk who lived in 1420. He reacted to the ungodliness of the world and lived in a monastic community. During his time he wrote classic instruction and encouragement to the other monks in the community. What I enjoy about reading these timeless classics is they are far removed from the culture of our day, yet the message is solid and convicting! When we strip away all of our cultural cliches, media and entertainment-man is still the same. I don't think Thomas a Kemphis would have ever thought that years down the road a young lady would pick up his writing and read in a culture so far removed from his. I wonder if years down the road someone will read through our blogs or our books? What will they think? Will our message be convicting and encouraging? I leave you with though from Thomas:
"But for the good that never changes, for the prize beyond all prizes, for the highest honor and the glory that never ends, men alas, are too lazy to put forth the slightest effort. You should be ashamed, lazy and ever grumbling servant, when you see other men more eager to lose their souls than you are to gain life! They find greater joy in chasing after empty dreams than you have in pursuing the truth. Speak to me and comfort my soul; help me to amend my whole life, and may it, in turn, give you praise, glory, and endless honor. "
